When to Order a Personalized Baby Gift So It Arrives in Time
Share
Every sweater and hat on this site is knitted by hand, one at a time, after you order it. There is no shelf of finished sweaters waiting for a name to be added. That is what makes it a keepsake — and it is also why timing matters more here than it does for anything you can put in an Amazon cart.
The short answer
Allow three weeks for making, plus shipping. For Christmas 2026, that means ordering by Sunday 29 November.

Why three weeks
A personalized knit is not a blank garment with a name stitched on afterwards. The name is knitted into the fabric as the piece is made, stitch by stitch, in the colour you choose. Change the name and the whole front panel changes with it.
So the three weeks covers:
- Charting the name. Every name is a different length. A five-letter name and a nine-letter name need different spacing, and sometimes a different stitch count, so the letters sit centred and even.
- Knitting the piece. Hand-knitting a child's sweater is days of work, not hours.
- Finishing. Seams, neckline, blocking, and a final check that the name reads cleanly.
Then it ships. Domestic delivery is typically a few business days on top.
If you have ever wondered why a hand-knit name sweater costs more than a printed one, this is the answer: you are buying the twenty-odd hours that went into it.
The dates, by occasion

| You want it for | Order by | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Christmas 2026 | Sunday 29 November | Three weeks of knitting plus holiday-season shipping. 1 December is the absolute latest, and it leaves no margin. |
| A baby shower | 4 weeks before | Showers are usually 6–8 weeks before the due date, so you have room — use it. |
| A first birthday | 4 weeks before | Also the moment to size up: see the note on sizing below. |
| A new arrival | As soon as you know the name | Many parents order the week the baby is born, for a Newborn or 6-Month size. |
| A due date you don't want to jinx | 3–4 weeks before | Order in a 6-Month size and it will fit the baby in the season that actually matters. |
Holiday shipping is the part people underestimate. Carriers slow down through December, and a parcel that takes three days in October can take a week in the third week of December. The 29 November cutoff builds that in.
Ordering for a baby who hasn't arrived yet
This is the most common question we get, and the answer is reassuring: order the bigger size.
A Newborn size fits for around six months — these are knitted with room to grow, so it lasts a good deal longer than the label suggests. Sizing up still helps if you are buying a long way ahead, for a shower or for a baby due in spring: think about what the baby will be wearing in the cold weather, not what fits on day one.
Sizes run Preemie, Newborn, 6 Months, 12 Months, 18 Months, then 2T through 12T, so there is room to grow with a child for years. Families often order the same design again in a larger size, and the two hang side by side in a photograph.
Not sure?
Tell us the due date or the child's age and we will size it for you before we start knitting.
If you've left it late
You have not necessarily missed it. Ask.
The three-week window is the honest standard estimate, not a hard rule. Depending on what is already on the needles, a shorter turnaround is sometimes possible. Message us with the date you need it by, before you order, and you will get a straight answer either way — including "no", if no is the truthful answer. A gift that arrives in January is worse than a gift you chose differently in December.
A useful workaround for a late order: a personalized hat knits up considerably faster than a sweater. It is the same handmade, name-in-the-knit keepsake, in a fraction of the time.

Three weeks is the point, not the problem
It is worth saying plainly. The lead time is not an inconvenience attached to the product — it is the product. Three weeks is what separates a gift the parents photograph and keep in a drawer for twenty years from one that goes in the donation bag after a season.
Nobody keeps the fourth blanket. Everybody keeps the sweater with the name on it.
