Matching Holiday Knits for Baby, Siblings and Grown-Ups

Matching Holiday Knits for Baby, Siblings and Grown-Ups

Every family has one holiday photo that gets framed. More often than not, it is the one where everyone is wearing something that matches.

Matching knits with each person's name are a step up from a store-bought matching set: they coordinate, but every piece is unmistakably someone's own. Here is how to plan a set that works across a baby, older siblings and the grown-ups — and arrives on time.

The one rule for matching sets

Order every piece at the same time. Each one is hand-knitted to order and takes about three weeks, so ordering together is how you make sure the whole set arrives together. For Christmas, that means by Sunday 29 November.

Three ways to match

1. Same design, different sizes

The easiest route: choose one design and order it in a size for each child. The Classic Ribbed Name Pullover works especially well, because the name does the talking and every size from Preemie to 12 looks the same. Two siblings in the same colors, each with their own name, is a photo that looks planned in the best way.

2. Same colors, different pieces

Pick one color combination and let each person wear something different: a name sweater for the toddler, a name hat for the baby, a sweater for a grown-up. It reads as a set without everyone being dressed identically — and hats are the gentlest way to bring in a newborn.

3. Grown-ups join in

Adult sweaters can carry a name, a title or a short phrase. GRANDMA across a navy sweater, matched with the grandchild's name in the same colors, is one of the most-photographed combinations there is. See the adult collection.

A matching store-bought set says you shopped together. Matching names say you're a family.

Picking colors that work across a whole family

Every piece comes in 24 colors, and you choose the garment color and the name color separately. A few rules make a set look deliberate:

  • Choose two colors, not three. One main color and one for the names. It is what makes a group photo look cohesive.
  • Keep the name color the same on every piece, even if the garment colors vary. The names are what tie it together.
  • Dark garments photograph best in a group. Navy, hunter green and burgundy with a white or cream name read clearly from across a room.
  • If you're mixing in hats, reverse the colors — a cream hat with a navy name next to a navy sweater with a cream name.

Sizing a set across different ages

Size each person for the date you'll take the photo, not for today. Children's sweaters run Preemie through 12 and are knitted with room to grow, so if anyone is between sizes, go up. Our size guide has the measurements for every size.

Worth checking

Because every piece is knitted for one specific name, a wrong size can't be exchanged. With a set, it's worth sending us everyone's ages before ordering — we're glad to check the sizes for you.

When to order a matching set

A set is several pieces knitted by hand, so give it the full three weeks, plus holiday shipping. Order everything together by 29 November for Christmas. The full timing breakdown is in our guide to when to order.
